calling it a "G1" wasn't very smart
The first Android is here. It is teh ugly. I think that’s kind of a good thing! The thing to keep in mind about Android is that it isn’t necessarily an “iPhone-killer.” The cellphone market is big enough that there inevitably needs to be a few different players, but currently the iPhone is without peer. That’s not a sustainable situation. So the Android’s goal...

Stack Overflow
Stack Overflow wants to become the hip new programming Q&A site that all the cool kids use. Looks pretty good so far… I’ll be ecstatic if they bump the crummy Expert Sex Change off the top of all the PHP- and javascript-related Google queries I make.

slow week
Not much going on this week unless you find javascript benchmarks exciting.  New Macbook Pros are anticipated next month. If they’re significantly lighter, or have a higher resolution screen, I’ll upgrade. If not, I think I’ll hackintosh an MSI Wind and have a simple road terminal.

quid goes pro
Danz: “you know that saying today’s miracle is tomorrow’s status quo? lately i’ve been discovering that this morning’s miracle is this afternoon’s status quo.” Ben: “I do this to Eric all the time. He comes through on something amazing and forever after that I’m like ‘but dude, we know you can do this. C’mon now.’”

iTons of changes
Let’s see, get rid of that useless “genre” column: check Get rid of the annoying “shop arrows”: check Hide the “genius bar”: check baby check With the exception of iPhone synching, I don’t think I’ve used a new feature of this software since v4.

RIP Rev 1, ?—2006
Was just discussing the free replacement of failing “magsafe” adapters, realized that it was basically the only problem I’ve heard of with new Apple models since the switch to Intel. Is the Rev 1 curse lifted? No, wait, the Air, the Air has problems. Almost there.  So, new iPods… hey, why does the Touch suddenly look nicer than the iPhone? The new nanos are effing...

back of the line, Mac
It feels strange for the Mac version of the Google Chrome beta to be so far off the horizon. Aren’t we the best five percent? Reminds me of feeling shafted on the other side of the fence when the Quake 3 Arena beta was inexplicably released for Macs and Linux several weeks before Windows. (id’s reasoning: keep the tester pool small while getting the early, obvious bugs out of the...

beep beep
“Hi, I’m a Road Runner.” “And I’m a PC — er, Coyote.” (Am I the only person who always thought it was “meep meep”?)

CSS frameworks
CSS frameworks hardly sound sexy in the face of all the new browser stuff that’s happening right now, but it’s an idea whose time is long overdue and they’re just about ready for prime time. I’m particularly digging on Blueprint.css.

Chrome fever
More on the gestation of Google Chrome. Okay, it’ll be awesome, that’s a given. The only — only — issue of real importance is, how the hell do they plan on getting it installed on people’s computers? Most jackholes won’t think twice about installing some untrustworthy wallpaper or animated cursor toy, but get them to install a better browser on the vague promise that...

slow down, iPwn cowboys
McManus splashes a little cold water on the iPhone app craze. Every iPhone-related idea I’ve had so far would be just as well served by a web app. (thanks Irrg!)

style vs substance
The next time someone accuses something of having “style over substance” (or vice versa) I will have a fucking fit. Style vs substance is a false dilemma.  I was thinking about this while noodling around on my new bicycle. One of the reasons why I picked the bike is that it is mostly unbranded — and the few points where logos do exist, I can simply remove them. I realized that when a...

Scott McCloud on Google Chrome
Google hired Scott McCloud to author a comic book about their upcoming browser. It’s really quite amazing; the text is so simply and clearly written that I initially figured the graphics were superfluous, but really they slow down the pacing of reading and make every point perfectly clear. I’ve never quite understood McCloud, and I’ve never felt like I had any problem...
