21st Century Post
Thinking about forming some kind of unified theory of etiquette, which would then be used as a platform for a 21st Century Etiquette guide. I was reminded of this by a tweet from lonelysandwich (of You Look Nice Today):
“Biggest pet peeve: people who order at a restaurant by saying ‘Give me…’ That’s straight up bush league, people.”
Francis added that “can I get” is hardly any better; less presumptuous, but grammatical dopey (“You can ‘get it’ if you get a job here, otherwise the kitchen area is off limits”).
Another from the “bush league” files: counting the money when someone hands you a handful of bills. Déclassé. Maybe there’s an exception to be made when dealing with register biscuits, but really you should be above that too.
I’m typing this from the cafe whose router blocks iChat/AIM. Come on people.
