For the uninformed: Amazon dropped “adult” content from their customer sales rankings. Some are interpreting this as a gay issue, but as far as I can tell it’s broader than that;Lady Chatterly’s Lover is delisted. Amazon claims it’s a glitch. Glitch my ass. If it were a “glitch,” it would have affected something random like Bowling or Pet Care, not a hot-button topic.
Breslin says: “It’s a corporation, what do you expect?” Ah, but the great thing about book culture is that we’ve historically got zero tolerance for this kind of bullshit. When the schools ban books, there’s an outcry, there’s a lawsuit, the school backs down. Most bookstores wouldn’t dream of pulling a fast one like this.
I’d pull our affiliate links from BCA, but my money’s on Amazon reversing course, fast. Watch this space in a couple weeks if I’m wrong.
(update: Okay, already it looks like the whole thing is baloney. Which is why I try really hard to put a two week moratorium on anything that causes me moral outrage these days.)
